【Location】
Ama Hostel is located in the Yaowarat Chinatown area of Bangkok, along the Khlong Ong Ang Canal. It is not far from Sampeng Market and hidden in a narrow alley between Saphan Han Lane and Bophit Phimuk Bridge (decorated with red lanterns). You have to look for it like a treasure hunt!
【Background】
The AMA Hostel building is over 200 years old, spanning 1,000 square meters and three floors. It consists of two sections: the main building and the annex. Back in the day, it was considered a mansion.
This grand property has been passed down through generations since the reign of King Rama V.
The larger section (shown above) was once home to the owner's extended family, while the smaller section (below) housed the servants' quarters.
A few years ago, the owner decided to transform it into a stylish, 2-star urban hostel, primarily attracting European and American visitors.
【AMA】
The name "Ama" (阿嬤) in Chinese dialect means "Grandmother," symbolizing the warmth and care of a kind, lovable grandmother who looks after her guests with grace.
Ama Hostel’s classic style has become a popular spot for media, influencers, and newcomers to take photos.
【Architecture】
The 19th-century Chinese-style mansion incorporates modern design and decoration, preserving as much of the original structure and features as possible. From the Chinese courtyard and intricate railings to antique inlaid wooden floors and beautiful wooden windows, the hostel retains rich and captivating details. The colorful tones breathe new life into the old artistic environment, allowing guests to immerse themselves in a vibrant cultural heritage.
Each floor is decorated with different tones inspired by the changing colors of the four seasons.
The first-floor lobby, using fresh green and eggshell white, embodies the essence of spring and winter. The moment you enter, the reception gives a warm, cozy feeling.
The second floor, inspired by summer, follows a Chinese style with a romantic red theme.
The third floor features a rainy season theme, with bright blue and white tones and modern-style decoration.
【Rooms】
The hostel offers dormitory and private rooms that combine simplicity and comfort. The second floor offers various room types, ranging from 2-person to 8-person rooms. All rooms come with air conditioning, a coffee discount voucher, and some even have a private bathroom. For example, the 2-person room with bunk beds is available for just 600 baht per night. There are also family rooms available, each priced at 1,100 baht per night.
The twin room with a private bathroom is available only on each floor, priced at 1,100 baht. Reservations must be made through the website.
The third floor is home to a family-style room and is also used as a rooftop bar (restaurant). During the author's visit in May 2024, it was closed due to fewer guests. The nearby shallow pool offers guests relaxing lounge chairs to enjoy the breeze and read a book.
【Coffee】
The AMA café, located on the first-floor lobby, offers both indoor and outdoor seating with about five tables.
In addition to coffee, they offer tea and other cocoa drinks priced between 100–120 baht. A unique signature drink mixes green tea, cocoa, and milk (pictured left), offering a smooth blend of cocoa with a green tea fragrance.
Even if you're not staying at the hostel, you're welcome to drop by for a cup of coffee and soak in the atmosphere of this century-old Chinese mansion.
AMA Hostel attracts visitors who want to relive memories from their past, experience a Chinese mansion, or like the author, embark on a magical time-traveling adventure!
