With the official operation of the MRT Pink Line in 2024, Thai visitors can now take the MRT to Min Buri Market Station and explore Min Buri Market (ตลาดมีนบุรี). In the past, it was too far to visit, but now that there's a convenient MRT line, it's definitely worth checking out. What does the market sell? What delicious foods can be found here?
MRT Pink Line 30 Stations
The Bangkok MRT Pink Line, with 30 stations, covers a total length of 34.5 km. It began trial operations on November 21, 2023, and officially opened on January 3, 2024.
The first station, Nonthaburi Civic Center, connects to the Purple Line. At the 14th station, Lak Si, it links to the Red Line towards Rangsit. At the 16th station, Wat Phra Sri Mahathat, it connects to the BTS Green Line, making it easy for passengers from these three lines to transfer to the final station, Min Buri.
From BTS to Min Buri
In April 2024, Thai visitors will explore Min Buri Market (second-to-last station). From the BTS Green Line, get off at Wat Phra Sri Mahathat Station, where there are signs guiding you to transfer to the MRT Pink Line. The transfer method is similar to the Yellow Line, with monorails and easy ticketing, and it's less crowded.
The ride takes about 23 minutes, with a fare of 45 Baht. Upon arrival, take Exit 2, and walk for about 3 to 5 minutes to the market.
Huge Min Buri Market
Min Buri Market is a large and historic traditional market, full of energy. If you enjoy exploring Bangkok’s traditional markets, this one is a must-see. It offers a vibrant glimpse into the daily life of local Thai people.
The indoor market not only sells fresh produce but also a variety of delicious food and snacks. Nearby, you'll find many shops selling household items, clothing, and electronics. As most customers are locals, many items are priced surprisingly low. On weekends, you’ll find stalls selling second-hand goods.
If you're not done exploring, right next to the market is Chatuchak Market 2, where you can find items similar to those at Chatuchak Market, but at more affordable (and authentic) prices.
Min Buri Market also has a public transport center, where you can transfer to other districts in Minburi. Nearby, there are restrooms, with a charge of 3 Baht. Parking fees are 5 Baht per hour, possibly the cheapest in Bangkok!
Many Islamic Goods and Foods
What makes Min Buri Market different from other large traditional markets in Bangkok is the large Muslim population here. Some of the vendors are Muslim women wearing headscarves, and the goods and foods they sell are often related to Islamic practices. If you're Muslim or are interested in Islamic food, this market is definitely a place you should visit.
Dusk Market with Lots of Food
In the evening, when the indoor market closes, the adjacent walkways become lively with street food carts setting up and preparing ingredients, waiting for the crowd to come and buy dinner to take home.
The walkways are lined with many food options, all of which look delicious and are very affordable.
